How a trace works
From a bankruptcy reference to a documented finding.
A trace follows an oil and gas, other mineral or renewable right through the records. People read the instruments and keep the missing pieces visible.

Define the question
Identify the estate or trust and the interest or right to be understood. Agree the records scope and who the work is for.
Identify the parties and places
Follow names and related entities to the counties, project sites, wells or other record references. Keep identity questions open where the source is incomplete.
Read what was retained or sold
Read the schedules, relevant orders and plans alongside the underlying records. Distinguish retained, excluded, sold or unscheduled interests by the document behind the statement.
Trace and grade
Read the instruments and relevant orders. For oil and gas, connect production and payor references where available. For renewables, read leases, easements and options. Label each finding by its source basis.
Compare the stated evidence
Separate what the documents show from missing information. A valuation worksheet, if scoped, states the assumptions behind any estimate; it is not an appraisal.
Carry the source and the gap together
Prepare a working file with references, source dates, the finding, its evidence grade and the next document needed. A person reads the records and decides what they support.
Evidence grades
The label says what supports the finding.
A grade accompanies the sources and dates. It does not establish ownership, current production, the life of a lease or a project's readiness on its own.
Production findings name the period covered and the latest month shown. Lease observations name the documents and terms read, and the facts still missing.
Renewable rights research covers recorded rights and document terms. Interconnection, capacity and project value are separate questions.
- Confirmed
- The underlying recorded instrument and relevant order, where applicable, have been read. Name those sources, the reading dates and any remaining holds.
- Corroborated
- Independent sources agree on the finding. Cite each source and identify the underlying instrument still needed.
- Indexed
- An index, schedule or filing lists a reference. Cite the entry and pull the document it points to; an entry is not a reading of that document.
- Lead
- A name or mention provides a reason to look. Record where it came from and seek another source before making a finding.
The next step is a person reading the question.
Tell us the case or estate if you know it and what you need to understand. We discuss whether the request fits, then agree any work in writing.
